Creativity Finds A Friend In the Hot Tub

Funny thing: this afternoon I had worked five hours straight in my home office chair and found myself feeling a little fatigued and stiff.  It was an balmy, sunny day in West Virginia.  I was drawn outside by the trees around my home, which are starting to showcase saffron, ochre and crimson hues. It suddenly seemed like a good idea to slide into the hot tub on my screened in deck for a delicious afternoon soak. Working at home can be SUCH a pleasure!

After five minutes of resting in the swirling, bubbly water and of being totally absorbed in the beauty around me, with no conscious effort, I found myself suddenly filled with inspiring, creative thoughts about the projects I had been working on.  The creative flow was effortless and fun; I just had to surrender to it!

Some books and articles I read about creativity make me tired!  Their authors seem to suggest that creativity is arduous, hard work.  To me creativity is about inspiration, joy, flow...the only thing I can really do to court it is to have a quiet mind, a space free from the busy-ness of rational thought.  That’s what the few minutes relaxing in the hot tub gave me...an opportunity to be present in the moment, allowing my brain to cool off and quiet down....so that I could reconnect with my creative spirit in a stronger, purer way.

What’s your equivalent of the hot tub?
